Coventry City's reserves notched up a comprehensive win as they beat Port Vale 5-0 at Nuneaton Borough this afternoon.

Three goals before the interval and two after it sealed the Pontin's League points for Steve Ogrizovic's men, who were never really troubled by the Potteries side.

The Sky Blues fielded a very strong side for the clash, which included the likes of Colin Hawkins, Ellery Cairo, Arjan de Zeeuw and former Vale favourite Chris Birchall.

Ironically, it was Birchall who have the Sky Blues the lead in the opening stages. Ellery Cairo, albeit from what seemed like an offside position, centred the ball from wide on the right and Birchall, who was playing up front, made no mistake as he slotted it home from six yards.

Two minutes later, the home side doubled the deficit - Robbie Simpson latching onto a long through ball before finishing low past Chris Martin - before Coventry went 3-0 up with 25 gone in a miserable half for Vale.

Good work from the Sky Blues on the edge of the box saw the ball break through to Hughes and the former Northern Ireland international finished with ease to wrap up a comprehensive first half of football.

The Sky Blues continued to dominate after the break and with 73 gone, Coventry  went 4-0 up through de Zeeuw, who hooked it over the goalkeeper after connecting with a long ball.

Five minutes before the end of the match, Coventry scored their fifth of the game - substitute Wayne Andrews producing a 20-yard rocket which gave Martin no chance.
