Dublin leaves it late
Sunday April 6, 1997 F.A. Carling Premiership
Venue: Anfield Att: 40,079 Referee: P Danson
Liverpool 1 Fowler (50)
Coventry City 2 Whelan (70), Dublin (90)
There is only one word to describe this game - unbelievable!
Under the tenure of Gordon Strachan, the Sky Blues were languishing close to the drop zone and this pivotal match set the precedent for the rest of the campaign.
With Liverpool flying high in the league and looking to overtake the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal at the top of the Premiership, City certainly were going to be in for a testing time.
The game started at an electric pace with the Reds dominating the play but the Sky Blues back-line kept the likes of Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore and Steve McManaman at bay.
It took until the 50th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Fowler showed his predatory instincts and produced a sublime finish which Steve Ogrizovic could do nothing about.
20 minutes later City were back on levels terms courtesy of Noel Whelan from a Gary McAllister corner. With the game deep into stoppage time, the Sky Blues snatched a dramatic winner through Dion Dublin.
A teasing McAllister corner fooled David James and Dublin pounced to finish with aplomb in front of the Sky Blue Army to confirm a remarkable turnaround.
City boss Gordon Strachan admitted that the Sky Blues lived dangerously in the first half but praised the spirit of the side in the second period of play:
"We went to Anfield hoping and planning to get a win," he said. "Liverpool are a very good side. In the first half they were technically excellent. They passed and moved and created a lot of chances.
"But Steve Ogrizovic kept them out with several saves and deserves a pat on the back.
"When you are 0-0 at a place like Anfield and have survived a few scares then you have real hope and I wanted us to be much more positive in the second half and we certainly was."
