Stephen Hughes showed what a good sport he is when he visited Parkgate School in Coventry this week.

The City skipper joined Class 5C in a game of rounders with a difference as well as being quizzed by the youngsters who were being rewarded for being amongst the most active youngsters in their area.

Pupils at Parkgate have been involved in a new initiative where they try to fit in an extra ten minutes of exercise into their busy schedules whenever they can, on top of the usual PE and Games classes.

And when Hughesy arrived at the school, located just minutes from the home of the Sky Blues at the Ricoh, Class 5C were involved in a game of rounders using footballs and tennis balls.

Hughesy gets active

Always willing to join in, the Coventry captain got involved with the fun and games, even if he wasn't too sure what he was doing!

"They called it rounders but when I was at school you used a bat and ball and we were kicking footballs and throwing tennis balls," he said.

"But everyone was having a lot of fun and if kids are getting plenty of exercise it's got to be a good thing."

As the heavens opened, everybody went inside for a question and answer session. Primed with some tough questions, Hughesy took time to answer them all as well as signing pictures, schoolbags and even a pair of goalkeeper's gloves!

When asked who he thinks the funniest member of the squad is, Stephen said: "It's got to be my roommate Marcus Hall. We room together at away games and he's hilarious."

The former Arsenal player cited winning the Premier League with the Gunners as his proudest moment and said that Freddy Ljungberg is the former teammate with the worst fashion and music taste!

CCFC would like to congratulate Parkgate School for their excellent work in becoming more active this school year.

This visit was in conjunction with the West Coventry School Sports Partnership who have linked up with the Sky Blues to encourage physical activity in 53 primary schools in Coventry (approx 12,000-14,000 children) and reward the most active classes.
