The Sky Blues stage a thrilling second-half comeback against Hull, coming from 1-0 down to win 2-1 courtesy of goals from Stern John and a goal-of-the-season contender from Dennis Wise.
Micky Adams made two changes for tonight's tricky clash at the KC Stadium from the side that went so close to beating Premiership Middlesbrough in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Saturday.
Don Hutchison made way for Dennis Wise who missed the game at the weekend through suspension, and Robert Page - who has been out since last month with a fractured cheekbone - returned to the side in place of the rested Richard Shaw.
It was City who created the first half chance of the game with the in-form Gary McSheffrey blasting over from distance as the Sky Blues went looking to assert themselves on the game early on.
On 11 minutes the home side engineered their first effort on goal, Kevin Ellison smashing a long-range half volley high and wide of Marton Fulop's goal.
Hull's Keith Andrews was the first player to enter the referee's book after a late challenge on Michael Doyle, and from the resulting free kick Tigers defender Damien Delaney headed inches over his own bar to put behind from a corner.
With the ball put back into the box from the corner kick James Scowcroft was able to steal in and power a well-hit half volley goal wards, but the Hull defence somehow smuggled the ball away.
Halfway into the first period and City were knocking the ball around with confidence, silencing the home crowd and giving the traveling Sky Blue Army reason to cheer.
The Sky Blues were possibly having the best of the play when Tigers midfielder Stuart Elliott found himself with space in the box to lash the ball past Fulop at his near post on 32.
Ady Williams and Marcus Hall had both dived in bravely to block shots but the ball spun out to the Northern Irish international who made no mistake to put the home side 1-0 up.
City almost found an equalizer five minutes from the break with Michael Doyle hitting a long-range volley towards goal that Stern John just failed to divert past 'keeper Boaz Myhill.
With 42 on the clock goal scorer Elliott almost doubled his and Hull's tally, running onto a short Keith Andrews free kick and forcing Fulop into an acrobatic save from a powerful drive.
Keith Andrews then rattled the crossbar with a super effort right on the stroke of half-time before Ellison then had an effort blocked to leave the Sky Blues relived to go into the break just one goal down.
Three minutes into the second half and it looked as if James Scowcroft had leveled for City, the former Ipswich man meeting a Marcus Hall centre at the near post but his side-footed effort went just the wrong side of the upright.
A minute later Dennis Wise had a chance to find the breakthrough but he was crowded out in front of goal before he could get a meaningful effort on target.
In what was fast becoming a real end-to-end game Hull's Darryl Duffy had a chance to make it two for the Tigers but having broke into the box he could only fire into the side-netting.
Gary McSheffrey had what was probably City's best chance of the game so far on 56 when he smashed a close-range effort goal wards only to see the ball ricochet off the face of 'keeper Myhill.
From the resulting corner Stern John was denied by a fingertip save from the Hull custodian as City pushed for a deserved equalizer.
On the hour Dennis Wise continued his goal-a-game ratio with a strike that will surely rate as goal of the season.
The Tigers defence could only half clear their lines and with the ball dropping on the edge of the area the evergreen midfielder executed a textbook overhead kick that arrowed in over the head of Myhill to send the traveling fans wild.
On 69 minutes Micky Adams was forced into his first change of the game with the injured Richard Duffy coming off for Matt Heath.
And four minutes later City deservedly took the lead with Stern John chesting in from close-range from a great cross by Gary McSheffrey, the Trinidad and Tobago international grabbing his fourth in the last three games.
With time running out for the home side Billy Paynter hit a powerful shot from the edge of the area but Marton Fulop was more than equal to it, plucking it safely out of the air.
Hull were awarded a free kick 25 yards out after Matt Heath was forced into a rash challenge but City dealt with the danger with ease to edge closer to only their second league away win of the season.
