Coventry City fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

A Gary McSheffrey penalty levelled the scores for the Sky Blues in the first half after the home side had gone ahead through Graham Coughlan, only for an unbelievable 35-yard strike from Chris Brunt to put the home side ahead again.

However, City dug in to get an equaliser against Paul Sturrock's side through Andy Morrell with 73 gone, only for the home side to clinch victory courtesy of a Brunt penalty.

Micky Adams made two changes to the side which beat Watford 3-1 on Wednesday night - both of them enforced.

Matt Heath came into the side for the injured Robert Page, while Dele Adebola, who has a hamstring strain, was replaced by Morrell.

Richie Patridge, who impressed while on loan at Coventry City three seasons ago, was on the bench for Wednesday after returning from injury.

The Owls created the first opportunity of the game on nine minutes, when Brunt's 20-yard effort was pushed around the post by Bywater.

After an early spell of pressure, the home team took the lead in the 16th minute, when Brunt's corner fell onto the head of Coughlan, who headed past the keeper from close range.

It was exactly the disadvantage the Sky Blues could do without, though McSheffrey tried his hardest to get the visitors back on level terms after 27 minutes, when his weaving run bamboozled the Wednesday defence before his shot was deflected into the side netting for a corner.

However, the home side were also trying to take the initiative and two minutes later, Bywater produced an excellent finger-tip save from Chris Eagles' free-kick.

But it was City who were destined to be next to score. On 31 minutes, McSheffrey was sent spralling in the area as he chased Doyle's ball by goalkeeper David Lucas and the referee aptly pointed to the penalty spot.

Despite a chorus of boos around Hillsborough following the decision, the striker-cum-midfielder kept his cool to bury the ball low into the net from the spot kick and put Adams' men back on level terms.

The goal seemed to be a catalyst for the Sky Blues, who looked more confident after finding the back of the net - Scowcroft the next to try his luck as he shot wide from the edge of the box.

But disastrously, City failed to keep up the momentum and conceded a goal in the 42nd minute - Brunt launching a swerving volley from 35 yards which dipped over Bywater and into the back of the net.

Sturrock's men could have had another just moments before the break - Craig Rocastle forcing an outstanding save from Bywater to flip the ball over the crossbar.

Willo Flood became the first player to go into the book on 46 minutes, when he received a yellow card following a challenge on Frank Simek.

The home team created the first chance of the half on 47 minutes when Lee Peacock couldn't quite connect with a Brunt free-kick though City immediately responded - McSheffrey pulling his shot wide of the right upright after racing into the final third.

Flood was the next to threaten when he turned and shot into the 'keeper's arms on 52 minutes, before the Irish midfielder was replaced by Claus Jorgensen just before the hour.

Wednesday had a glorious opportunity to net their third of the afternoon with 72 on the clock when the striker found himself in a great position on the left, only to pull his shot of the far upright.

And they were left to rue the chance they missed just moments later, when a Hughes delivery was headed into the back of the net by Andy Morrell.

But yet again, City did the inconceivable and allowed the home side to take the advantage again.

Whing was guilty of fouling Peacock in the area and the referee didn't delay in pointing to the spot - Brunt taking the spot kick and finishing with conviction to wrap up the three points.
