The Sky Blues score a terrific victory after coming from a goal behind against Plymouth thanks to goals from Andy Morrell, Don Hutchison and Gary McSheffrey.
After a scrappy opening to the game, Plymouth took the lead through David Norris and shortly afterwards City were dealt a blow when Micky Adams had to make all three of his substitutions due to injuries.
But the Sky Blues refused to lie down and Morrell and Hutchisonn put them ahead at the interval with McSheffrey netting shortly after the break to seal the win.
Adams made one enforced change to his starting line-up with Andy Whing coming into the side at right-back for the suspended Richard Duffy, who had to sit out the game after picking up his fifth booking of the season last week against Norwich.
After going ahead early against the Canaries, City were looking for a similar start but the first chance came Plymouth's way when Tony Capaldi crossed in and Paul Wotton nearly got on the end of it but good work from Marcus Hall saw the ball go behind for a corner. The same combination linked in the tenth minute to create a far better opportunity when Capaldi whipped in a dangerous free-kick and Wotton pulled away from the defenders at the far post but thankfully failed to direct his header on target.
The Sky Blues were looking lively going forward though and a snapshot from Michael Doyle nearly caught Argyle keeper Romain Larrieu unaware but things soon took a turn for the worse for City.
Matt Heath needed treatment when he fell awkwardly under pressure from Micky Evans but although he got to his feet, the opening goal came with City's defence in disarray. Anthony Barness whipped in a great ball and David Norris finished past Martin Fulop to give the Pilgrims a 26th minute lead.
Micky Adams acted immediately by making a triple substitution. The injured Heath was replaced by Richard Shaw but the City boss also brought on Andy Impey for Marcus Hall who had a calf problem and Don Hutchison for James Scowcroft. The former Leicester man had signalled to the bench early in the game and was obviously unable to continue.
It was a terrible slice of fortune for City who, already reeling from going a ball behind, now had no further substitutions to make should anybody else be injured in the remaining hour of the game.
But Coventry provided the perfect response when Andy Morrell equalised in the 36th minute. Claus Jorgensen took matters into his own hand with a weaving run, taking on three Plymouth men before picking out Morrell who finished well.
Norris had two good shooting opportunities just before the break as City's makeshift defence backed off but Marton Fulop saved the first well and the second went just wide.
Right at the death City nearly took the lead but Dele Adebola smashed the underside of the crossbar after Morrell had headed the ball into the danger area.
That seemed to be it but in the fifth minute of stoppage time Hutchison finished superbly after good work from Andy Impey teed him up. The loan man shaped to shoot, turned and fired a crisp shot past Larrieu to put Coventry ahead.
After staring adversity in the face and coming out with a one-goal advantage it was important that City did not let the visitors back into it and they got the second half off to the perfect start when they extended their lead in the 48th minute.
Gary McSheffrey hit a brilliant shot from the edge of the area which left Larrieu with no chance as it hit the inside of the post and went in.
That goal really knocked the stuffing out of Plymouth who switched to a 4-3-3 formation with 20 minutes left on the clock as they looked to launch a comeback.
The game itself had lost its edge but Coventry were looking extremely organised at this point, with every player doing a sterling job. Richard Shaw was playing superbly in the centre of the defence while Hutchison's experience in the middle of the park was also giving plenty of stability.
And it was Hutchison who nearly added City's fourth with eleven minutes to go when he rose at the far post to head a cross against the outside of the post.
As time ticked away Fulop was called into action when he made a sharp save from Wotton and Micky Evans was not alert enough to get onto the rebound.
But the visitors rarely put City under serious pressure after going two goals behind and the Sky Blues deserve immense credit for the way they rallied after the setbacks of the first half.
