Stern celebrates

The honours ended even in a fiercely contested local derby between the Sky Blues and Leicester as Stern John cancelled out Richard Stearman's early goal although it is City who will feel they could have taken more from the game, missing a number of great chances and hitting the woodwork.

Coventry were rattled when Stearman opened the scoring in the eighth minute but John equalized within three minutes. The Trinidad and Tobago international spurned several decent opportunities and had a goal ruled out for offside while Wise hit the woodwork in the dying stages.

Micky Adams made five changes to the side that grabbed an impressive 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road on Saturday with Richard Duffy, Dele Adebola, James Scowcroft, Richard Shaw and Dennis Wise all awarded starts against the Foxes.

The Sky Blues got off to a bright start and there were one or two incidents between opposing players in the opening ten minutes, notably with Dennis Wise and Iain Hume who had an altercation in the middle of the pitch leading to the referee having a word with both players.

But Leicester were ahead in the eighth minute when Richard Stearman angled a shot into the far corner of the goal to the delight of the Foxes fans behind the goal. Questions would certainly be asked of the Coventry defence who failed to close down the Leicester defender when a cross from the left found him unmarked.

Thankfully the lead only lasted three minutes and City were on level terms thanks to Stern John who made no mistake from close range, blasting the ball past Foxes keeper Paul Henderson after collecting a good ball from Richard Duffy.

Wise received the first booking of the game when he elbowed Nils-Eric Johansson and City then just managed to keep the visitors out when a goalmouth scramble appeared to be heading over the line but for a last ditch clearance from Marcus Hall.

In the 22nd minute John looked to have scored his second of the afternoon when he sent a glancing header past Henderson from a Wise free-kick, but he was ruled offside.

As the half drew to a close Coventry were enjoying prolonged spells of possession but were struggling to find the killer pass having gone behind early on, the signs were there that the Sky Blues were growing stronger as the game went on and looked in good shape for the second period.

With only a couple of minutes left before the interval Fulop was called into action when he made a fine save from Danny Tiatto's rasping effort - a timely reminder that Leicester packed plenty of punch in attack.

With both teams eager to assert themselves on the game the second half began with young Leicester forward Matty Fryatt being booked for a rash challenge on Welsh international Richard Duffy.

On 58 Micky Adams was forced into his first change of the game with the on-loan Richard Duffy forced off with a neck injury after some rough treatment from Johansson, Andy Whing taking his place in City's backline.

With 64 gone Leicester manager Rob Kelly withdrew captain Danny Tiatto, throwing on Andy Welsh in the Australian's place before three minutes later the Foxes were reduced to 10 men.

With the ball to be won Andy Whing went into a 50/50 challenge with Patrick Kisnorbo, the Foxes man launching himself into an over the top two-footed tackle on the City man leaving referee Hill with no option but to red card Kisnorbo.

On 70 both managers made a double switch with Elvis Hammond and Stephen Hughes entering the fray in place of Iain Hume and Matty Fryatt for the visitors, while for City Hutchison and Thornton came on for Adebola and McSheffrey.

On 77 the Sky Blues were inches away from taking the lead as Stern John had an effort cleared off the Leicester line.

The Trinidad and Tobago international displayed his usual silky touch and cool head in the box, turning smartly before firing past Henderson, only to see his pile driver cleared by Richard Stearman. John then sent a close range shot over the crossbar as Whing's superb cross found him unmarked at the far post.

The Sky Blues continued to apply all the pressure and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead five minutes from time. Thornton provided a good chance for Hutchison with a mazy run into the area and neat square ball but the shot was blocked, after which Wise rattled the crossbar with a close range overhead kick.

City fans could justifiably be upset that their side did not come away with all three points after dominating much of the game but the performance from the players was commendable at this late stage of the season.
